to me

Dear Ms Jackie Flanagan

I would like you to join me for a presentation by the Light artist Kari Kola about his work on why “Without light, there’s nothing”. The presentation will take place at the Finnish Residence (17 Shrewsbury Road) on the 6th February at 5 pm followed by a reception.

Kola’s piece of light art for Galway 2020 “Savage Beauty” turns mountains emerald and blue

For Galway 2020, Finnish Light Artist Kari Kola and his team turn their attention to the extraordinary beauty of mountains next to the Lough Na Fuaiche, as he will create the largest lit artwork ever made. Exploring the Galway 2020 theme of landscape, he brings the newest technology to highlight one of Ireland’s most iconic locations. In a massive illumination, Kari Kola makes a light roof over the whole valley and will use green and blue to make one big art piece next to the Lough Na Fuaiche. Dazzling display of technical virtuosity will coincide with Ireland’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations.

— This is a ”once-in-a-lifetime-opportunity”, which you shouldn’t miss, smiles Light Artist Kari Kola. To celebrate the Galway European Capital of Culture, I want to create something that all Irish people and people around the world will remember for the rest of their lives! The idea is to make a very large and unique landscape installation for four days, on 14th - 17th MArch. We are playing with the scale and stillness of the place. This work will underline the beautiful nature of Ireland using light art on an unseen scale. The lighted surface will be around 6,000,000 m2, so in terms of a lighted area, this is probably the largest installation ever created, says Kari Kola. Savage Beauty Light Art Work  is a co-production with Galway 2020

Kari Kola, the Finnish light artist has made illuminations all around Europe and millions of people have seen his work. His light art piece 2017 on the mountain Saana in Lapland, to celebrate Finland’s centennial, was the largest light installation ever made. At present Kari Kola is working on an incredible project, Impact with light, involving UNESCO World Heritage sites. This project, in addition to increasing global awareness of our precious historical sites, will also create a visual platform for discussion, education and concrete acts on important environmental issues such as climate change.
